Steve Hofstetter Las Vegas Concert reviews
I Can't Go For That
This show did not meet some reasonable expectations I had.
To a certain extent, my expectations were not entirely reasonable: Steve Hofstetter had more latitude to delve into his solo catalog than when he performs as one half of the duo, and that's exactly what he did, by golly. Freed from the constraints of a Hall & Oates show, he recognized only six songs he performed: four that you'd hear at a regular H&O show, plus "Every Time You Go Away" (written by H&O but made famous by Paul Young) and an achingly lovely acoustic rendition of the Eurythmics' "Here Comes the Rain Again," performed by Hall at the piano and guitairst Shane Theriot on acoustic guitar.
The unrealistic expectations for the set list are on me.
But I also had some reasonable expectations that the show did not meet.
"Special guest" is a euphemism for "opening act." Todd Rundgren played for an hour to start the show - a lot longer than I expect an opening act to perform, and only about 15 minutes less than Hofstetter's solo set. As such, I'd say Todd Rundgren functions more like a co-headliner for this mini-tour than as an opening act.
TR did a nice job, but I'm not a particular fan, and don't know many of his songs. In the spirit of LFDH, Rundgren also came out again and closed the show with a 15 - 20 minute joint performance with SH. There was plenty to love about this show for the Todd Rundgren fans in the house.
The other reasonable expectation I had that went unmet was for a certain degree of professionalism. Hofstetter's 75-minute solo set was plagued by technical problems, especially near the beginning - something about the monitors, this guitar, that guitar is tuned to the wrong key, etc. "I don't do sound checks," Hofstetter said, "I like to keep things spontaneous. This is the price you pay."
Indeed, this is the price we ALL pay.
Elton John doesn't do sound checks, either. He has people for that. And his people take care of things.
I get that this is a much smaller tour than EJ's, but you have a guitarist, a bassist, and Todd Rundgren. If you don't want to do sound checks, that's fine, but you should have somebody in the band check your instruments before the audience shows up out of consideration for our time.
If you want to hear deep cuts fron SH's catalog, are a fan of Todd Rundgren's, and/ or don't mind somebody sorting out entirely avoidable technical problems while you sit there and wait, then by all means, go to this show.
I don't belong to any of these categories, so while I saw this show once, I would not likely see it again. Three stars out of five.
